Day 4 of the 2011 APPT’s Melbourne Main Event proved to be its last one too. A champion was crowned after 9 hours of heavy green-felt hostilities. Leo Boxell was the one who walked away with the top prize and the trophy. A local player, Boxell has now certainly made poker history winning the first ever Melbourne event of the Tour. Beyond the above said significance of Boxell’s win, his triumph carried further meaning: the $330k that he picked up, carried him over the $1 million mark as far as career tournament earnings are concerned. This achievement instantly turned Boxell into one of Australia’s most successful poker pros.
9 players returned to the tables on the last day of APPT action in Melbourne, and the stakes were high indeed. Despite having made the final table, the first of these guys to be bounced would only go home with $27.5k. Julius Colman was the one who eventually became the first victim. He was followed out the door by Jason Zheng, who picked up $36.7k for his efforts. Eddie Mascardi and Michael Frydman followed. Van Marcus, who bit the dust in 5th place, pocketed $73.3k. William Jones survived him, but he was the next victim, taking home $88.6k.
The first player to take home a 6-figure prize was Steve Bouya. He won $116k and his elimination set up the heads-up stage of the tournament between start of the day chip leader Phillip Willcocks and the eventual winner, Leo Boxell.
Barely did the home stretch of the tournament kick off, Boxell dropped a huge pot to his opponent on a 2,2 vs Q,Q match-up. This mishap got him stuck with a 3-1 chip handicap, which he had to work off inch by inch. The final hand of the event saw Boxell’s 4,2o go up against Willcocks’ J,10o. The board fell 2,Q,6,4,J and the deal was sealed.
Willcocks picked up $207.6k for his 2nd place finish.
