APPT Melbourne Main Event – Billy Argyros Wins

The 5th day of the Asia Pacific Poker Tour’s Melbourne Main Event saw the final table play down to a winner. The one left standing with all the chips in the game piled up in front of him was well-known Aussie poker buff Billy “The Croc” Argyros, who bested Bowdy Tolhopf heads-up for the title, after a three-way deal had been made at the top.
Argyros is one of the first Australian Poker hall of Fame inductees, and he has quite a poker record to boast. Unfortunately for him, even though he did take down the title, he wasn’t the one to take home the largest prize of the poker tournament: his share of the prize-pool was only $134.5k, while the runner-up, Bowdy Tolhopf, took home more than $166k. Third –place finisher David Yan was also part of the three-way deal. His reward was $133k.

As the action kicked off, short-stacked Jazz Mathers found himself compelled to get something going early. He pushed all-in with pocket 9s but he got called by Ravi Maravar and his Ac, 10c for the coin-flip. An A fell on the turn and Mathers was sent packing, with a $16.6k consolation prize. Maravar couldn’t exactly put his chips to good use, since he was the next player to head to the rail. His reward was $22.9k.
The next competitor to have his title hopes dashed was Phi Luu, who was bounced in 7th place. He was followed by Joe Cabret in 6th, who picked up $37.5k for his efforts. After Robert Damelian was sent packing too, it was the turn of the start of the day chip leader, Ashley Mason to hit the sidelines. The three-handed deal left Argyros the shortest, but eventually it was he who prevailed, locking up the top spot.
