APPT Melbourne – Sam Razavi Wins

The APPT’s Melbourne Main Event wound down on Monday, playing down to a winner. Sam Razavi was the one who took down the title, together with the $326.1k top prize.
The start of the day chip leader was Tom Grigg, who came into the day with a marginal lead and eight rather formidable opponents. Brendon Rubie was in the mix too. While everyone expected Rubie to make a deep run, he failed to live up to the expectations. As a matter of fact, he was the very first player out the door, eliminated in 9th place by Kristian Lunardi, whose pocket Qs got the better of his Kc, 9c. Rubie picked up a little over $27.1k for his efforts.
The short stacks came under pressure early as one would’ve expected, but since Rubie beat them to the rail, they only started to file out the door in his wake. Nigel Andrews was the player who bit the dust in 8th place. He picked up $36.2k for his efforts.

Andrew’s elimination opened the flood-gates. Player after player began hitting the rail, with Kristian Lunardi spearheading the exodus. Lunardi lost a classic coin-flip, with Ah, Qh against Wayne Bentley’s pocket 7s. The reward for his 7th place finish was $45.3k. James Bills bit the dust next, eliminated by the same Bentley when his Ac, Jc fell to the latter’s K,Qo.
Gary Benson fell in 5th place and as soon as Wayne Bentley found the way to the rail in 4th place, the 3-handed stage of the poker tournament was set. During 4-handed play, Grigg was still the chip leader, so it came as quite a shock when he busted out in 3rd place, leaving Keith Walker and Sam Razavi to battle it out heads-up. In his final hand, Grigg ran into Razavi’s full house for the bust.

Razavi held a massive chip lead going into the last stretch of the action. He took about 10 minutes to dispose of his opponent, sending him packing at the end of Ks, 10s vs J,J match-up in which he made a spade flush.
