APPT Sydney Day 1A report

The Star City Casino in Sydney was once again the focal point of a major live poker event. This time, it was the Asia Pacific Poker Tour’s Sydney stop that filled up the tables with a rather select team of poker players, one that included names like Chad Brown, Julian Powell and Celina Lin on Day 1A.
There were 108 players in the first day’s starting field, but because of the furious nature of the action, more than half of the field would be at the rail by day’s end.

James Obst was one of the first noteworthy bust-outs as he flopped two pairs on a board made up entirely of diamonds. Hoping that none of his opponents had the suited pocket hand for the flush, he committed his entire stack, only to see Harris Pavlou turn over the very cards he had been dreading. The turn and the river failed to hit him for a boat so his day was over fast.
Vanessa Rousso ran her pocket Jacks into Greg Cook’s pocket rockets for her early exit.

David Saab was also eliminated as well as Josh Pang Ang who received the knockout blow from Phil Willcocks. As Pang Ang trapped Willcocks on a flush draw vs smaller flush draw match-up, the latter came from behind to catch a straight on the river and to send him to the rail.

PokerStars’ own Chad Brown also fell victim to Willcocks when he caught two pairs on a turn he deemed worthy of staking his tournament life on. Unfortunately for him, Willcocks also had two pair, a bigger one than his though, and that meant the end of the battle for him.

Out of the 109 players who bellied up to the felt at the day’s start, only 48 were left in the battle when the last hand of the day was consumed. Thanks to his rather formidable run, Phil Willcocks ended up at the top of the leader-board with 129,000 chips, followed in second by Steven Musca with 103,200.
Provisional third place went to Daniel Kowalski as Tony Dunst, Sam Jessop and Greg Cook also survived to fight another day.
