APPT Sydney Day 1B report

Day 1B of the Asia Pacific Poker Tour’s Sydney event saw a much larger field hit the tables than on the day before. 172 players bellied up to the tables of the Star City Casino, a field which was a rather star-studded one this time as well. Local “name” pros Billy Argyros, Jeff Lisandro and Grant Levy were joined by Raymond Rahme, Mark Vos and Terrence Chan.
The start of the action was characterized by the same general chip-lust as the day before. Billy Argyros became one of the early victims of the onslaught as he was eliminated by Terrence Chan on a true heart-breaker of a hand. Having a pair of 6s in the pocket, Argyros saw his fate sealed by the flop which landed A,10,6 giving him a set on which any skilled poker player would try to get as many chips into the pot as possible. Little did Billy know though that fate had played a nasty trick on him, as the same flop gave Terrence Chan – who had 10,10 in the hole – an even bigger set.
The turn and the river did little to redeem Argyros, who was not only forced to head to the rail with his tail between his legs on his home turf, it also made him the loser of an AUD 10,000 bet he had struck with WSOP Main Event Champion Peter Eastgate, whom he thought he could outlast in the tourney.
The 2007 winner of the APPT Sydney didn’t fare much better either. Grant Levy struggled along for a while, then shoved all-in on a pair of 7s hoping to finally double up but ran into a caller who had K,J. The board didn’t bother to feed suspense at all as it ran K,10,A,10,3 sending Levy to join Argyros at the rail.
Mark Vos had a much better day though, and the best hand did indeed hold up for him twice in a row as he doubled up twice on pocket rockets. Jason Gray ended the day with the chip lead having cracked Nathanael Seet’s pocket Qs in the process.
Gavin Griffin finished 2nd on the provisional leader board, followed by Andy Meldrum in 3rd and Mark Vos in 4th.
