217 Day 1A, B and C survivors squared off on the second day of the Asia Pacific Poker Tour’s Sydney stop. While many of the big names had already been sent to the rail on the previous days, the Day 2 line up was still loaded with names like Chris Moneymaker, John Juanda, Wooka Kim and Van Marcus.
At the end of the day, none of these stars were to be found among the 48 players who survived to do battle on Day 3 and who had all had their money finishes secured.
Terrence Chan was the first victim of day as he busted out on the very first hand. Chris Moneymaker, John Juanda and Tony Dunst were fast to join him at the rail.
Van Marcus, the Manila luck-bag, wasn’t so lucky this time, although his guardian angel sure tried his best. He went all-in on a pair of Jacks against pocket rockets like he once did in the Manila Main Event, and sure enough he caught a J on the flop. Lady Luck must’ve decided that enough was enough though as an A landed on the turn to give John Mendel a higher set.
Mark Vos also found the rail a few hands later, and so did Gavin Griffin who got cornered by Eric Assadourian, then shoved all in an his A,8 against Michael Wibley’s A,Q. Despite the fact that Wibley’s hand was dominating, the flop which fell A,8,10 gave Vos the lead. The Q on the turn however changed all that and the K on the river couldn’t help him.
Phil Willcocks, the chip leader of Day 1A was among the survivors as he maneuvered his stack carefully through the day and avoided marginal situations.
The bubble boy was David Sanis who went all-in on A,8 after several successful hands had nabbed him from the jaws of extinction. This time however, he ran into a pair of Qs Tim English was fast to call him with.
The board fell 8,Q,9, 10,3 and the bubble burst.
When the cease-fire was called, Frank Saffioti was in the lead with 619,000 chips, followed Brendan Edmonds in a distant second with 508,000.
