Aussie Millions - $100k Challenge wraps up as Main Event kicks off

The $100k Challenge of the Aussie Millions came to an end the other day as the final table participants played down to a winner on the second day of the event. The peculiar thing about the poker tournament was that not all final table participants would make it to the money. As a matter of fact, no fewer than 3 of them would see no money whatsoever, and surprisingly, start of the day chip leader, Jonathan Karamalikis would be among them.

Karamalikis fell at the hands of eventual winner Dan Shak, who became responsible for Aussie pro and Party Poker representative Tony G’s demise too in 5th place. As the last player to finish in the money, Tony G picked up AUD 100k for his efforts. Tony Bloom finished in 4th place, followed to the payout queue by Billy Jordanou in 3rd. The heads-up stage of the event began with Full Tilt Poker’s Phil Ivey holding a slight chip advantage over Dan Shak. Shak managed to rebound though and eventually eliminated Ivey to win the AUD 1,200,000 top prize.

The much awaited Main Event of the Aussie Millions kicked off the other day, with two day 1 flights. The total combined starting field from Day 1A and Day 1B numbered 476 players and more are going to belly up to the tables today, on Day 1C.
Peculiarly enough, it was Day 1A that yielded a larger number of “name” players. Many of these players fell by the side during the day, but a large enough number of them made it to day 2. Tom Dwan, Sorel Mizzi, Barry Greenstein and Erick Lindgren all survived and they will all be back at the Crown Poker Room for Day 2 of the tournament.

Others didn’t do so well. Phil Ivey’s name highlighted the casualty list, which included John Tabatabai, Emad Tahtouh and Mike Watson too.

Day 1B saw Annette Obrestad, Van Marcus, Jeffrey Lisandro and Leo Margets advance, while Chris Ferguson, Grant Levy and Erik Seidel weren’t so lucky. The reigning champion of the Aussie Millions Main Event, Stewart Scott failed to make it past the first day too.
