Aussie Millions $250k Challenge – Day 1 Report

The Aussie Millions’ high rollers are breaking one record after the other, and the $250k challenge kept within that trend. Its first day of action saw no fewer than 37 buy-ins go into the middle. A total of 18 players survived the day, at the end of which, veteran high roller specialist Erik Seidel emerged with the top stack. Seidel had 944k chips bagged. He was followed in the chip-counts by Tom Dwan. Dwan will start day 2 with an 815k stack.
Isaac Haxton, he who had bought into the $100k Challenge no fewer than 6 times, finished the day in 3rd place, with exactly 800k chips to his name. Yevgeniy Timoshenko, the winner of the $100k Challenge, is very much in the running in this poker tournament as well: he finished Day 1 with 705k chips, in 5th place, right behind PokerStars pro Jason Mercier, who finished 4th with 767k chips.
Tony Bloom, Phil Ivey and Tobias Reinkemeier made the top 10 of the event as well.

Daniel Negreanu – who cashed in the $100k Challenge – was sent packing on Day 1. In fact, his elimination gave Seidel a good chunk of his eventually field-leading stack. On a flop of Jc,7h,3c, Negreanu and Seidel got into a bit of a back and forth, which eventually resulted in all the chips going into the middle. Seidel then showed 9c, 8c for the straight and flush draws, while Negreanu turned over pocket 3s for the set. Seidel filled his flush though and the Canadian was done, as his opponent’s stack shot past the 900k mark.

Re-buying was an option in this event as well, and like in the $100k Challenge, several players decided to take advantage of it. Igor Kurganov for instance bought in three times, eventually finishing the day with 235k chips.
