The $250k Challenge of the 2014 Aussie Millions is in the books and we have a two-time winner on our hands: Phil Ivey was the one who bested the record-breaking starting field of the
poker tournament, taking home AUD$4 million, twice as much as he did a couple of years ago when he won this same event. The haul also qualifies as the largest single prize of Phil Ivey’s career, not an unimpressive feat indeed.
At the beginning of the second and final day of the event, Ivey didn’t look much like a top contender. He was 7th in chips, but he once again proved that he should never be underestimated, even when the odds aren’t on his side.
The first victim of the 8-handed final table was Max Altergott. Following Altergott’s elimination, things got really serious for the remaining players, on account of the massive AUD$500k bubble that was looming. Erik Seidel, the veteran high roller specialist was the next player who got bounced, missing out on the good money.
Tom Dwan was the man who landed in 6th place, picking up AUD$500k for his efforts. He was followed to the rail by Fabian Quoss, whose share of the prize-pool was AUD$800k.
PokerStars’ Daniel Negreanu, one of the best ambassadors the game of poker has ever known, was sent packing in 4th place. Negreanu’s reward was AUD$1.25 million.
Mike McDonald’s elimination in 3rd place set up the heads-up stage of the event. McDonald’s share of the action was a nifty AUD$1.9 million.
Haxton, who had put more than AUD$1.1 million into the middle at the 2014 Aussie Millions, with absolutely nothing to show for it, recouped all his losses and secured a pretty handsome profit on the side by making it to second place.
The final hand of the tournament saw Ivey’s A,6o best Haxton’s 8,7o.
