Aussie Millions, event #1 – day 1A

The 2011 Aussie Millions kicked off with a $1,100
NL Holdem event. Last year, this same event attracted a starting field of 1,143 players, and offered the winner a little over $200k. This year, the interest was once again there from the get go. The first of 3 projected day 1 flights saw 294 players belly up to the green felt. The winner of last year’s Aussie Millions, Tyron Krost was the one who gave the official start by calling the traditional ‘shuffle up and deal’. Though there will be doubtlessly scores of ‘name’ players taking part in the event, day 1A mostly belonged to the local crowd.
Mel Judah, Billy Argyros, James Akenhead and Jay Kinkade were all there. Maria Ho and Tony Dunst were among the Day 1A participants too.
12 levels were played on the first day. When the action was called the chip leader - a head and a shoulder above the rest - was Jason Overbeek. The majority of Overbeek’s chips came from a hand towards the end of the day, in which he eliminated two players in one swoop. The hand in question was a typical perfect hand in which no fewer than three players picked up starting hands worth pushing all-in on. Overbeek had pocket Ks against a guy’s pocket rockets and another guy’s pocket Qs. The stage for the explosion perfectly set, all three of them ended up all-in. Overbeek was the lucky one as he managed to spike a K on the board for the set and for the win. Oberbeek eventually finished with a 200k+ stack.
The interesting thing about the event was that those eliminated on Day 1A would be able to buy back on Friday and since the weather doesn’t look particularly enticing, a good number of them will probably do just that.
