Aussie Millions event #1 – Day 1b report

The second day 1 flight of the 2011 Aussie Millions’ first event saw a starting field of 283 players belly up to the table, just a few guys short of the day 1a yield. 12 levels were squeezed into the day, at the end of which, of the 283 starters only 42 were left in contention. The chip lead went to Martin Drew when the dust settled. Drew managed to amass a stack of 218,800 chips. Tolly Sakellariou did well too: he finished 2nd in chips, with a stack of 207k. Jonathan Karamalikis was the top-finishing “name” pro. He built a stack of 107,300 chips.
All three of these guys shot to the top close to the end of the day. Drew had been hiding in the middle of the pack for most of the day, but caught a few timely chip-ups to shoot to the top. Sakellariou’s rise to second place came in one of the last hands of the day. Karamalikis’ stack had been up and down throughout the day, before the last level of action when he managed to chip up massively.

Tony Dunst, Maria Ho and James Akenhead had all been eliminated on a previous day and they all took advantage of the possibility to buy back into the action of Friday. Other players to take advantage of the repechage were Scott Montgomery, Eric Assadourian and Annette Obrestad.
The last day 1 flight of the event kicks off on Saturday and all those who busted out on Day 1b will get another chance to rebuy. The repechage nature of the event certainly had an effect on the way players approached the tournament. Whether that effect is a positive one or not remains to be seen.
