143 players returned on Day 2 of the 2011 Aussie Millions’ first event to battle it out for the AUD 200k top prize. All-in-all, 1,000 entries were registered through the 3 day 1 flights, but because of the repechage nature of the event, not all of those were unique. The second day would be the last one too, as the goal was to play down to a winner.
There were quite a few “name” registrants like James Akenhead, Annette Obrestad and Tony Dunst, but none of these players managed to make it to day 2.
The aim of reaching a conclusion on day 2 was a rather ambitions one, especially considering the fact that the money bubble was still ahead when the action kicked off. John Corr’s elimination burst the bubble, and while there are few more painful situations a poker player can find himself in than being the bubble boy of a high stakes international poker tournament, these days it is apparently becoming common that the organizers offer the bubble boys some sort of a consolation prize. Corr picked up his in the shape of a gold pass to the Australian Open.
The bursting of the bubble meant that the action would speed up quite a bit. It took about 10 hours for the final table to be reached. On the final table bubble, things slowed down again. It took over two hours for the final table bubble to burst. Justin Cohen did all the other survivors a huge favor by eliminating Isaac Lau in 10th place. Lau’s pocket Ks were cracked by Cohen’s A,J.
Jonathan Palmer headed to the rail next, followed by Scott Montgomery in 8th place.
Cohan managed to turn the chips he picked up through the above described elimination, into a 3rd place finish.
Martin Drewe disposed of Darren Kramer heads-up to win it all.
Event #2, a $550 Poker Pro Shootout, concluded as well crowning Jared Soloman the winner.
