Aussie Millions Main Event Day 1C report

Posted by: James Carter. - Wed, 2009-01-21 16:56

It seems like most of the players looking for a shot at the Aussie Millions Main Event have saved themselves for the last day of the 3 Day 1 flights. There were 288 players sitting down to the tables on Day 1C, and a huge number of ‘name’ pros among them. Scotty Nguyen, Phil Laak, Clonie Gowen and Joe Hachem have all picked this day to get rolling and so did some non-poker celebrities like boxer Shane Fenech and jockey Shane Dye.

David Rheem, one of the highest quoted players at the tournament set a new record although I think it’s safe to say it was not of the kind he’d ever be proud of. His tournament only lasted for 2 hands. He hit two pairs on the flop and held the lead in the hand when he went all in and got a caller in a player with Q,Q. Unfortunately for Rheem, the turn landed another Q and he was sent to the rail before even getting the chance to warm up to the action.

Tom Dwan, the headliner of every poker related website these days was also eliminated relatively early. He left his table and his stack pretty much evaporated by the time he got back. Struggling to make up the lost ground, Dwan ran his A,10 into an opponent’s A,K only a few levels later and headed to the rail.
Gus Hansen was also late for the game, and he busted out after going all-in on his pocket Jacks from the SB.
He found a caller who had K,Q suited and hit a Q on the flop for the win sealing Gus’ fate. Jennifer Tilly busted out a tad later, followed by John Juanda, Yevgeniy Timoshenko and JC Tran soon.
Tran got all in with 8,9 against Joe Hachem’s Q,9 preflop. Hachem hit a Q-high straight on the flop and Tran never managed to catch up.

At the end of the day, it was Ben Charlton who took the chip lead after having scored a big pot against Dan Shak. Luis Pampliega finished second, followed by Jani Mikkola in third place on the provisional leader board.
