Day 16 of the WCOOP saw the big names finally emerge. With the buy-ins on the rise and thus the low buy-in masses taken out of the equation, it was the pros’ turn to shine. Event #38, the $500+$30 NL Holdem one saw the rise of team PokerStars’ Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier who ended up with the day’s biggest prize, a $232,230 whooper.
Terrance Chan was the other pro who walked away with a top prize on Day 16. He won the $1,000+$50 6-max Limit Holdem event, taking down a $83,030 prize.
The final event of the day, the $200+$1 NL Omaha Hi/Lo one went to Chris Viox, who took home a $42,263 prize.

Event #38, the $530 NL Holdem one that ElkY eventually won, attracted a field of 1,169 players. The prize-pool was a whooping $1,369,000 one, which gave plenty of reasons for pros and amateurs to do their best to get their hands on some of that money.
Grospellier began the final table 7th in chips, but that was soon to change as the Frenchman began chipping up, winning hand after hand and nailing a crucial pot against Hafiz Khan with 5 players remaining in the game.
Khan had a pair of 7s and flopped a set on a board of 7s,5c,c9,Ac,6c, betting into Grospellier every time he got his turn. Holding Kc,Jd, Gropsellier called every time, hoping to hit that K-high flush on the river. Sure enough, the river did land another club and ElkY managed to stay in the game at a point which proved to be critical later on in the economy of the game. Player “Ginshash” finished second in event #38, for a $171,125 payday.
James Mackey finished 15th in the event and Eric Froehlich ended up in 13th.

Event #39, the $1,000+$50 6-max Limit Holdem one, attracted 437 registrants, who combined for a prize-pool of $437,000.

Terrance Chan secured the goods in this one, managing to dispose of Cesar Fuentes heads up after a grueling back and forth battle. Fuentes had a dominating chip lead at one point, but he couldn’t capitalize on his 12:1 chip advantage. Shortly before delivering the final blow, Chan managed to cripple his opponent for good, leaving him with only a couple of BBs in his stack. That was probably the point where the tide had definitely turned Chan’s way. Holding J,3 Chan landed a set on the flop of 3,5,3. A betting game ensued which continued after the 2 on the turn and the Q on the river. Eventually, Fuentes just mucked his hand, with barely enough left in his stack to see two more hands. Chan pocketed $83,030 for the win and Fuentes had to settle for a $61,180 prize.
The final event of the day, the $215 NL Omaha Hi/Lo one saw Chris Viox defeat Ben Lamb for the title and the $42,263 top prize. The final hand of the event saw Viox turn quads against Lamb who failed to complete a low. Barry Greenstein finished 19th in this event and Billy Argyros finished 31st.
