Borgata Winter Poker Open – Day 1 Report

On Tuesday, the first day 1flight of the Borgata Winter Poker Open’s first event went into the books at the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa. The $500
NL Holdem event – which offers a $2 million guarantee - drew a starting field of 1,212 players and since there are two more Day 1 flights scheduled, officials are probably right to expect the guarantee to be more than handily covered.
The Day 1A field was rife with “name” competitors, but there were quite a few online qualifiers and local heroes in attendance as well. After 16 levels of action, the player who had the most chips stacked up in front of him was Torrey Korsog, who finished with 372k chips.
Korsog’s lead over the second place men was quite marginal though: Roger Wellman and Johnson Nguyen both finished with stacks of 361k chips to make joint second place.
Randy Pfeifer finished among the large stacks as well, with 345.5k chips to his name. Robert Panitch finished above the 300k chip mark too, and Erik Lefkowitz almost did as well, having had 297.2k chips bagged at the end of the day.
Most of Panitch’s chips came towards the end of the day, when he managed to double up through Mark Cincotta. Panitch got all his chips into the middle with an A,Ko and Cincotta tagged along with an Ad, Qd. No help came for either player, and Cincotta was done.
Actor James Woods and Borgata Winter Poker Open Main Event champion Andy Hwang also played on Day 1, but neither of them managed to advance. Men Nguyen was among those eliminated too.
Day 1A was quite formidable indeed in terms of attrition: of the 1,212 players, only 201 remained standing.
Due to the format of the event, all those who busted on Day 1A will be able to return on Day 1b though.
