Brock Parker defeats Daniel Negreanu heads-up for event #14 title

Event #14 of the 2009 WSOP, the $2,500 6-handed Limit Holdem one, served up one of the tastiest heads-up confrontations so far. 11 players returned to action on the final day, and when the dust settled in the wake of the day’s action, it was Brock Parker who stood triumphant, having pocketed not only the $223,688 first prize and his first ever gold bracelet, but the rights to brag too about having bested none other than Daniel Negreanu in the heads-up stage of the event.

Jimmy Tran was the first victim of the final day. He shoved all-in on his A,Jo preflop, got a call from Barry Schulman with K,Q and looked pretty solid on the flop and turn which fell 9,6,4,3. The K on the river gave the pot to Schulman though and Tran was done.
Robert Como was the 10th place finisher, his tournament fate sealed when he ran into Daniel Negreanu’s top pair.
Nikolay Losev fell in 9th, followed by Shawn Buchanan in 8th.
Jim Buckley became the official final table bubble boy when he ran his pocket Ks into Brock Parker’s pocket rockets. The board gave both players a set and Buckley was out in 7th.

Daniel Negreanu had a pretty solid chip lead at the start of the final table action and he proceeded to take full advantage of that edge. Even though Kevin Hong was the initial final table shortstack, he refused to succumb and fought back taking out Kyle Ray in 6th place. Tommi Horkko drew blood next, as he eliminated Barry Schulman.

Brock Parker, Daniel Negreanu and Kevin Hong tangled in a three-way pot next, with Hong getting the shorter end of the stick and picking up $60,885 for his 4th place. Considering that he’d started the final table shortest on chips, it was indeed a stellar performance from Hong.

Tommi Horkko matched skills with Negreanu next in a decisive hand, in which Negreanu’s K,10 secured a set of 10s on the turn to send Horkko packing in 3rd.

Negreanu enjoyed a handy chip advantage heading into heads-up play against Brock Parker, but the latter asserted control of the action after an initial see-saw stage.
The final hand of the event featured a flop of A,10,6 and a 4 on the turn, on which all the money went into the middle. Negreanu tabled K,10 against Parker’s A,J to lose the battle and the WSOP bracelet.
