Taking place in Las Vegas, the gambling capitol of the US and the World, the
WSOP is a truly international affair. The 2012 edition of the Series saw 101 countries represented at the tables, and this year, that number climbed to 107. Knowing the amount of world-wide interest that the Series garner year after year, it is only natural to develop an interest in which countries dominate the tables.
Being the host nation, the US is obviously at the top of the list, with an iron grip on the top spot. This year, Americans took down no fewer than 40 bracelets and registered 6,035 cash finishes, totaling $109,966,358 in earnings. Obviously, no other country could even come close to equaling that performance, but of the remaining 106 nations, Canada stood out by a head and shoulder. Canadians took home 10 bracelets and logged 561 cash finishes for a prize total of $10,579,113.
The Brits brought up the rear of the top 3, having scored 3 bracelets and 277 cash finishes for a total of $8,592,506. Returning to the Canadians though: the one who started the 2013 bracelet rush was Charles Sylvestre, the winner of Event #3, a $1k
NL Holdem tournament. Sylvestre took home a $491k prize and he started a domino effect which would see 9 more of his fellow countrymen repeat the feat through the Series.
After the first 21 events of the Series, there were already 6 Canadian bracelet winners. Benny Chen was one of those winners, together with Levi Berger, Malcolm Malm and Mark Radoja. Calen McNeil added his name to the winners’ list as well.
23-year old Jason Duval’s win was something of a surprise, while Nick Schwarmann and Daniel Idema’s bracelet wins less so. Kristen Bicknell, the winner of the $10k Ladies Event was the last Canadian winner of 2013.
