Casino Gambling to be Expanded in New York?

Casino gambling has gotten a boost this Tuesday, when New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a law called the Upstate New York Gambling Development Act, the aim of which is the expansion of casino gambling in areas of the state hit by economic hardship. While the bill can indeed make it legal for various upstate regions where there is currently no Indian-run gambling, to open their own casinos thus generating jobs and economic motion, nothing – or rather very little – is etched in stone about the whole initiative.
The main provisions of the bill , which are about the Hudson Valley-Catskill, the Saratoga-Capitol District area and the Central-Southern Tier area, are pending a referendum to be held this coming November. If voters choose not to approve the move, obviously nothing will become of it. In its current shape though, the law will permit Suffolk and Nassau counties to set up their video slots venues, regardless of the outcome of the above said referendum.
According to Cuomo, the focus of the bill is the boosting of the local communities in Upstate New York, where about a decade of dire economic stagnation has exacted a heavy toll on the economy. The objective is planned to be achieved by creating several world-class gambling destinations in the area which would then attract tourists, from the US as well as from abroad.
Several experts disagree with the bill though, believing that the eventual social and economic costs that will add up as a result of the creation of these planned gambling establishments will defeat the projected benefits of the move.
The bill makes it clear that gambling will be excluded from Westchester, Long Island, Rockland and New York City itself, for at least the next seven years.
