The Macau Poker Cup kicked off over the weekend and its opening event is already in the books. The winner of this event was
PokerStars’ own Celina Lin, who took down her 4th Macau Poker Cup title this way. The event that she won was the HK$2k
NL Holdem Deep-stack event, which saw 205 players belly up to its tables upon kick-off. Lin’s reward was a HK$85.8k top prize. Far above and beyond her victory’s direct significance, Lin set a new record with it: she became the only poker player to have racked up 20 final table presences in various live events which count for the Asia Player of the Year race. To be entirely frank, she’s made more than 20 tables, but those logged before the 2009 introduction of the Asia Player of the Year scoring system were obviously not kept track of.
Lin defeated Hazel Chui heads-up for the title, in a bout which proved to be an extremely challenging one for her: at the beginning of the heads-up stage of the tournament, she had a 3-1 chip deficit. Her first priority was to catch up with her opponent and then to maneuver herself into the lead. Once she achieved that, all she needed was a bit of luck, and she was indeed granted the break when the chips went into the middle on a flop of 8s,5h,3s. Chui had an 8h, 6h for the top pair, while Lin only had a lowly 6,5o for the middle pair.
The turn was the 5d, giving Lin trips and the 3h on the river sealed the deal in her favor for good.
Lin acknowledged that she was glad to have reached the milestone, but she also said she was a lot more interested in playing in and winning the Red Dragon Main Event.
