Derek Raymond picks up $2,500 Omaha Hi/Lo bracelet

Derek Raymond took down the $2,500 Omaha Hi/Lo event’s bracelet after a nearly 3 hour long heads-up battle in which he eventually put Mark Tenner away. The 23-player field of the final day of action featured names like that of Mike Matusow, Frankie O’Dell (a Omaha Hi/Lo specialist), CK Hua, John Monnette and Pat Poels. It took Raymond about 14 hours to get rid of all these guys and that includes the 3 hour heads-up match against Tenner.

The day began on a fast and furious note as no fewer than 5 of the 23 survivors were sent to the rail in the first few minutes. Matusow was the very first to go. The “Master of the Shortstack” fell to James Dempsey as the latter scooped the pot with an 8-high straight. David Rabbi, Jonah Seewald and Victor Del Toro were quick to follow him. Jim Banafato finished 19th eliminated by J.W Smith. Meng La, CK Hua and Frankie O’Dell headed to the rail in that order, followed by Danny Smith in 15th, James Dempsey in 14th and Jeff Tunkel in 13th.
Patrice Boudet was eliminated in 12th by Michael Keiner, J.W Smith fell in 11th place, at Josh Schlein’s hands and John Monnette became the final table bubble-boy, when Michael Keiner scooped the pot with his Ah,Ad,3d,8s, against Monnette’s 9s,7h,6h,5s on a board of 7s,2d,Qd,Jd,2h.

The first elimination of the final table featured Pat Poels, the short-stack, going up against Scot Bohlman. Bohlman made a flush and a low to scoop the pot and to send Poels home in 9th place.
Mark Tenner built up a nice chip lead in the meantime, mainly at the expense of Mark Keiner and Josh Schlein.
Mark Gregorich was the player to head to the rail in 8th. He was soon followed to the payout booth by Mark Keiner, Eliminated in 7th place by Derek Raymond.
Bohlman proceeded to flop a wheel next to send Sirous Jamshidi to the rail in 6th position. Josh Schlein, the player who’d started the final table in the chip lead, was bounced next in 5th place, by Derek Raymond.
Fabio Coppola fell in 4th place, eliminated by the same Raymond, who’d apparently started his final stretch rally around that time.
Scott Bohlman trusted his tournament life to a two pair next (5s and 7s) and got called by Tenner, who’d turned a set of 5s. The river was of no help for Bohlman who finished 3rd for a prize of $93,199.

Tenner started the heads-up play with a marginal advantage and things were fairly back and forth for a while, until he managed to take an almost 2-1 chip advantage at the end of a large pot in which Raymond was forced to fold. Raymond managed to claw his way back though, first by rivering a flush and then by chipping away at his opponent’s stack little by little.
The final hand of the event gave Raymond a wheel to crown him champion in style, as Tenner picked up $141,647 for his second place. Raymond earned $229,192.
