Doyle Brunson Won’t Play in This Year’s WSOP

With the poker world abuzz with excitement over the upcoming WSOP, a bit of sad news mixed into the general frenzy on Tuesday, when Doyle Brunson, the living poker legend, announced through Twitter that he wouldn’t be playing in this year’s Series. Doyle, who is known in poker circles as Tex Dolly, and who is 79 years old, said that he was finally giving in to Father Time and passing on the
2013 WSOP.
Over the years, Father Time did indeed have an increasing influence on the number of WSOP events The Godfather of Poker would play. In 2011, he took part in 7 gold bracelet awarding tournaments, coughing up a total of $93k in buy-ins. He obviously played in larger buy-in events choosing to forego the small buy-in ultra-popular events for the opportunity to play against “name” competitors. In 2012, he played in 4 events, paying out $67.5k in buy-ins. Unfortunately, Doyle failed to cash in any of those 2011 and 2012 events that he played in. In fact, his last WSOP cash came in 2009, when he made it all the way to 17th place in the WSOPE’s £10k London Main Event, taking down £31.1k for his efforts.
His first gold bracelet came way back in 1976, in the $5k Deuce to Seven Draw event, which he won, picking up an $80.2k prize. Doyle secured his 10th gold bracelet in 2005, when he won the 5k Short-Handed
NL Holdem event, taking home 367.8k for his efforts. His most prolific bracelet years were 1976 and 1977, both of which saw him take down two bracelets. He won bracelets in 1978 and 1979 too, but from there on out, it became much more difficult for him to grab the gold. If Doyle does indeed retire from WSOP competition, the Series will have lost a landmark personality.
