Durrrr Challenge – Cates extends lead

Tom Dwan hasn’t exactly been doing well this year, and things don’t seem to be straightening up for him either. A couple of days ago, he returned to the durrrr Challenge tables to try to shave a bit off Daniel Cates’ lead. Things didn’t exactly go according to plan for him though and he ended up dropping another $270k over about 780 hands of $200/$400 NL Holdem. That latest setback extended Cates’ lead in the series to $1.2 million.
So far, the series have been rather lop-sided in Cates’ favor: He won more than 10k hands, while Dwan only managed to take down 7.4k.

The biggest pot of their latest session was a $127,988 one, which ended up in Cates pockets. The hand started out with a couple of standard preflop raises and re-raises, after which the flop fell 6c,7h,5s. Cates placed a bet, and Dwan quickly raised it. In response to that, Cates shoved all-in. Dwan moved all in as well. Dwan then revealed 5h, 6h for the two pair, against Cates’s 8s,7s (gutshot straight draw and top pair). The two players agreed to run the turn and the river twice. The first time, the two Js which fell gave the pot to Cates. The second time, a 4 fell on the river, filling Cates’ straight and sending the entire pot his way. A few hands later, Dwan got things going with a monster pot of his own. The $117k whooper ended up in his possession, after his pocket Js hit a set on the turn.

Cates didn’t leave things at that though, and managed to land another monster before the end of the session. The hand was a classic coin-flip, which saw his pocket Qs go up against Dwan’s A,K. The board fell a bunch of bricks and the pocket pair held to give Cates the $105k pot.
