Durrrr Challenge – Cates Extends Lead Yet Again

After a slaughter of a durrrr Challenge session, in which Cates added a few hundred thousand buckskins to his overall lead, the two players met at the Challenge tables again a couple of days ago. This latest session has made one thing clear: Dwan hasn’t managed to find a way past Cates, and even though he didn’t lose as much as before, he still ended up $39,797 short at the end of the 1,099 hand session.
So far, over 19,335 hands played, Cates has managed to build up an impressive lead of more than $1.2 million.
Despite Cates’ apparent dominance, the largest pot of the latest durrrr challenge session went to Tom Dwan. Weighing in at $108,573, the whooper was still unable to significantly alter the tide of the bout.
The hand began with the usual preflop action, after which the K,J,7 rainbow hit the board. Cates fired out a bet which Dwan promptly called. The 9s on the turn squeezed another bet out of Cates, and Dwan once again tagged along. The 6h fell on the river and Cates made the ultimate intimidation-move: he shoved all-in. Dwan made the call and tabled a measly K,7 for a pair of 7s, which was enough to beat Cates’ Q, 5 though.
Cates was quick to retaliate, and soon after, he took down a $101k pot, at the end of a hand which played out in nearly similar fashion. The usual preflop action was followed by a flop of K,8,8, which prompted Cates to fire out a bet. This time, Dwan raised it and Cates made the call. The 5s on the turn saw Dwan shove. Cates made the call and tabled J,8 for the trips and the superior kicker. Dwan had 8,6 but he never managed to catch up kicker-wise, despite the fact that they ran the river card twice.
The third biggest pot of the session, a $93k one, ended up in Cates’ pockets as well.
