Durrrr challenge: Dwan recovers some “small change”

The pace of the Durrrr challenge sessions has picked up somewhat in the wake of the WSOP, as both players returned to the virtual tables. Before the WSOP kicked off, Dwan had built up a sizeable lead over his opponent, a lead which quickly vanished in two consecutive sessions after the Series. Not only that, but Antonius took a slight lead a well.
The latest durrrr challenge session saw the two protagonists logging a 90 minute session, during which 458 hands of $200/$400 PL Omaha were played. The challenge is slowly creeping towards the 50% mark of the total 50,000 hands required, as the two players are virtually even again. Coming off a high stakes session which cost him a little over $900,000, Tom Dwan found some time to sit down with Antonius again in order to forward the painstakingly slow progress the challenge series have seen so far. At the end of the brief session, Dwan was $26,431 in the black, which meant that Antonius’ lead has ebbed to $34,135. Because that margin is within one buy-in, for all practical reasons, the challenge can once again be considered even.

Because of its brief nature, this latest inning at the 4 challenge PLO tables made it impossible for the two players to build up some truly massive stacks, which in turn meant that none of the usual monster pots would come about. There were only two hands which generated pots larger than $100k, which may seem like a lot to mere mortals, but which is quite insignificant in durrrr challenge terms.
The largest pot of the session was a 107,988 one which ended up in Dwan’s possession. The hand began with the usual preflop action. Antonius raised it to $3,600 and Dwan made the call to see the 10s, 5h, 4c flop. Antonius checked that to Dwan, who kept the pressure up by firing out a $5,200 bet. Antonius check-raised that to $22,800 and Dwan shoved all-in in response. He then showed K,K,10,9 for the pair of Ks, and Dwan turned over 8,8,6,3 for the straight draw. He never made his straight though as a 6 came on the turn, but he landed an 8 on the river which gave him a set and the pot.

It didn’t take long for Antonius to even things out though. Only a few hands later, he took down a $101,195 pot which all but annulled durrrr’s previous win. The usual preflop raises and calls were followed by a 10,7,2 rainbow flop. Dwan fired a $4,800 bet into Antonius and the Finn called it. A Q landed on the river and this time it was Antonius’ turn to play the aggressor. Dwan made the call and a 10 fell on the river. The money went all-in and Antonius showed J,10,7,7 for the flopped set and the rivered boat. Dwan’s A,A,6,3 was far behind.
With the frequency of challenge sessions apparently gathering some momentum, we’ll hopefully see the two players wade through some more of the remaining challenge hands soon.
