The high stakes online poker scene has been sizzling these days as nearly everyone who’s anyone has showed up at Full Tilt’s nosebleed tables recently. The main attraction is a Swedish player known only by his online nick “martonas”. Martonas had amassed around $2.4 million in winnings in recent weeks having taken the nosebleed community by surprise. By now though, opponents seem to have adjusted to Martonas’ playing style, or it may be just Lady Luck who left his side as he began to give all that money right back. Not wanting to miss out on the free ride, all nosebleed stakes regulars have shown up, looking to grab a piece of martonas’ stack. Phil Galfond was active, as well as Richard Ashby, Patrik Antonius, Di Dang, Ilari Sahamies, and of course, Tom Dwan.
Out of all those present, Tom Dwan managed to take the lion’s share of the action provided by martonas. He picked up no less than $1.1 million over the weekend, which is about as much as martonas has dropped, so it’s safe to say Dwan was the one who picked up pretty much all of martonas’ chips.
The action focused on the $300/$600 PLO tables, where 5-handed play was yielding a series of large pots, culminating in a $461,000 whooper which Dwan promptly lifted off martonas.
This pot saw Patrik Antonius kick off the preflop action with a $2,700 raise, which got promptly re-raised by martonas. Both Dwan and Antonius called the raise to see a flop of 10d,6d,2c. martonas was quick to keep the pressure up by betting $22,800 on the flop, Dwan however made that $98,100 immediately. Martonas shoved in on top of that for $215,690 and Dwan made the call. Dwan already had a pair of 2s secured, as well as a nut flush draw. Martonas had a wrap straight draw and a flush draw as well. The 10c landed on the turn, offering martonas a club flush draw, but he Qd on the river ruined everything for him as it filled up Dwan’s nut flush and the $461,076 pot was shipped the American’s way.
Shortly after that hand, Dwan dragged another monster off martonas when the latter went all-in having hit a set of 7s on the flop, only to be faced with Dwan’s straight and flush draws, which proceeded to fill up to relieve the Swede of another $283,000 chunk.
Dwan wasn’t the only big weekend winner though. Phil Galfond cut himself a fair share of the steak too, finishing with a $821,000 profit. Another big winner was Ashton Griffin, who raided the $300/$600 PLO tables himself, walking away with a $1.3 million profit at the end of it all, money some of which came from Patrik Antonius, in the shape of a $239,000 pot.
Martonas too ended up generating some profit that day, but he eventually dropped almost all of it to Phil Galfond.
Another player, known only by his screen-name (POKERBLUFFS) ended up winning half a million too.
