EPT Barcelona Day 4 – Final table reached

Given the fact that the field of 23 survivors set to continue the green felt battle on Day 4 of the EPT’s Barcelona Main Event, included no fewer than 5 former EPT Champions, it was rather clear from the get go that the hostilities would take on a whole new dimension. Add to that the fact that only a few of the survivors had larger than average stacks and you have yourself the makings of a dog eat dog fight like no other.
Sure enough, the short-stacks jumped right into the middle of the action as soon as the it kicked off, but with all that, it took about 10 hours for the field of 13 to play down to the final 10.

The chip leader going into the Day 4 action, Georgios Kapalas decided to stay out of trouble early on and to let the shorter stacks settle things among themselves. Patrick Bueno, another large stack, adopted a radically different approach though. He attacked his opponents aggressively hand after hand and soon found himself in trouble.
Betrand Grosspellier had managed to navigate around the money bubble skillfully the other day, but his tourney lifeline ran out of steam on day 4. Having started the day on only 520,000 chips, the Frenchman soon found himself compelled to make that dreaded do or die move and he picked to commit his last chips on a K,J. His opponent, Oleksandr Vaserfirer didn’t have much of a hand either, yet his A,3 managed to beat ElkY’s K,J on a board which gave none of the involved players anything.
Thus, Grospellier was booted from the table in 19th place, followed soon by fellow countryman Jan Boubli in 18th and Patrick Bueno in 17th.

Roland De Wolfe, who had been responsible for quite a bit of bickering on the previous day, busted in 15th place, followed to the rail by Ari Kolpanitzki and Michael Greco.
Marc Goodwin on the other hand thrived under pressure. At one point he took the chip lead and went on to build up a massive stack, nearly twice as big as that of his closest pursuer. That stack meant a free ride for him to the final table and sure enough he finished the day in second.
Matt Lapossie insisted on continuing to fire out bluff after bluff and that soon took a grievous toll on his stack. It also seem to work fine on occasion though, as Lapossie went on one hell of a rollercoaster ride, which eventually landed him in 3rd place at the final table.
Jens Kyllonen staked his tourney life on a pair of Js and got called by Carter Phillips with pocket Ks. That pot gave Phillips’ stack a huge boost as a result of which he vaulted straight into the chip lead.

Mike McDonald busted in 11th place, at the hands of Phillips to further fuel his momentum. The unofficial final table bubble boy was Cornel Cimpan, but the official 8 handed final table still stood one elimination away. The title of official final table bubble boy befell Holland’s Julien Nuijten, whose A,K was cracked by Goodwin’s A,Q.
Asa Smith, Mihai Manole, Georgio Kapalas and Toni Ojala have also made the final table.
