EPT Barcelona Main Event – Day 5 Report

24 players returned to the tables of the EPT’s Barcelona Main Event on Friday, with one goal in mind: to play down to the final table of the
poker tournament. Indeed, after about 6 levels of play, the final table was reached. Ilari Sahamies, one of the regulars at PokerStars’ nosebleed stakes cash game tables, was the one who clinched the chip lead at the end of the day. Another ‘name’ player who made the final table was John Juanda, who only finished 7th in chips though.
As soon as the action kicked off on day 5, heads started rolling. The short stacks found themselves under a great deal of pressure to get something going and they did indeed try to chip up. As a result of that, Luis Rufas was bounced early, followed in short order by Alain Roy.
Roberto Romanello, one of the all-time EPT greats, was bounced early too, in 22nd place.
Lucille Cailly was the one ejected from the action in 21st place. Her demise came at the end of a classic coin flip which saw her pocket Qs fall to Ole Schemion’s A,K. She picked up €29.4k for her efforts. Other players who had to settle for the same amount of money were Merino Borbolla, Mauro Canavese and Javier Piazuello. Fatima Moreira De Melo trusted her tournament life to a coin flip as well. She got all her chips into the middle on an A,J against Anaras Alekbverovas’ pocket Qs. The pocket pair triumphed this time and Moreira de Melo was eliminated too.
The chip leader of Day 1A, Aku Joentausta, found his way to the rail as well. He fired out a bluff which was promptly shot down by Schemion, busting Joentausta in 14th place.
The official final table bubble took close to three hours to burst. When it did, it saw Sahamies send Schemion to the rail on yet another coin-flip, which saw the former’s pocket 8s best the latter’s A,K.
