EPT Barcelona Main Event – Tom Middleton Wins

The last day of the EPT’s Season 10 Barcelona Main Event saw 8 players return to the tables, to play down to a winner. Five levels of action went into the day, before a winner emerged. Tom Middleton, the player who’d had a firm grasp on the top spot of the poker tournament for its last three days, was the one who walked away with the top prize of €942k. The haul was not the full projected share of the winner, because Middleton struck a heads-up deal with the eventual runner-up, Kimmo Kurko. Kurko ended up with €750k.
Despite the fact that it took quite a bit for the winner to be determined, the first elimination of the day came about relatively quickly: Andreas Christoforou bit the dust on the 17th hand of the final table, taking home €102.4k for his efforts.
He was followed to the rail by Eduard Bhaggoe of the Netherlands, who was rewarded with €143k. France’s Benoit Gury followed Bhaggoe to the sidelines. His share of the prize-pool was €188k.

The first “name” player to be eliminated was Finland’s Pasi Sormunen, whose 5th place earned him €235k. Italy’s Luca Fiorini was the next player to be sent packing. His reward was €328k.
Kresten Nielsen’s elimination in 3rd place set up the heads-up stage of the event. Nielsen was rewarded with €440.5k for his efforts. He was bounced by Kurko. Once the heads-up stage was reached, Kurko and Middleton decided to make a deal. They were relatively even in chips, and the terms of the deal reflected that: they basically agreed to reduce the share of the eventual winner in favor of the runner-up, this is how they arrived to the eventual numbers.
The final hand of the event saw Kurko’s A,4o fall to Middleton’s pocket 5s.
