The 10th season of the
European Poker Tour is officially underway: the €50k Super High Roller of the Barcelona stop of the poker tour got going on Friday. 39 players coughed up the massive buy-in on the first day of action and 10 of them decided to re-buy after they were bounced, so currently there are a total of 49 buy-ins in the prize-pool. It is still impossible to determine the final numbers right now, because registrations are still accepted, right up until the official start of the second day.
Last year, the same event saw 55 buy-ins go into the middle, but given that there’s still plenty of time for players to show up, that number may yet be exceeded.
8 levels of action went into the day, at the end of which 37 players were still standing. The one to finish with the largest stack was Sandor Demjan, who had a little over 1 million chips bagged. Demjan was followed by Fabian Quoss, with 813k chips to his name, and
PokerStars pro Daniel Negreanu, who had 619k chips bagged. Needless to say, the top 10 at the end of Day 1 was made up almost exclusively of “name” pros. Besides the above said players, David Benefield, Steve O’Dwyer, Erik Seidel, Salman Behbehani, Daniel Alaei and Bertrand Grospellier also finished with healthy stacks.
Demjan, the end of the day chip leader, had a pretty disastrous start to his day. He was actually one of the first players to bite the dust. He bought back though and he got moved to the feature table, where his luck turned around. He picked up a decent pot from Daniel Negreanu and then he went on to add to his stack to cement his top spot, by eliminating Igor Kurganov.
