As anticipated, Andrew Chen, who started the final day of the
EPT’s Berlin Main Event with a large stack, proved to be a dangerous presence at the final table indeed. He made his way through the opposition all the way to the heads-up stage, but he ran out of gas there, ceding the title to start of the day chip leader Davidi Kitai, who thus became the first ever Belgian player to take down an EPT title. Kitai had managed to win a WSOP bracelet in 2008, so this newest addition to his trophy-case will go nicely with that.
The EPT title wasn’t all that Kitai picked up at the end of his pitched heads-up battle with Chen: he also got a bracelet worth €10k for his efforts and an entry to the €100k Champion of Champions season-ending event.
According to many observers, the heads-up bout between Chen and Kitai was the best one of the entire current season.
Pratyush Buddiga was the first victim of the final table. He picked up a handsome €72k for his efforts. Marc Wright followed him to the rail in 7th place. Kitai was the one who eliminated Wright, besting his gutshot straight draw with a top pair. That pot put Kitai into a massive lead, giving him twice as big a stack as that of the second place man.
Mario Puccini swung into action next, eliminating Cesar Garcia. Garcia picked up €133k, becoming the first player to finish in six-figures in the event.
Bahadir Kilickeser, the player to start the final table with the second largest stack was the next victim. He picked up €172k for his efforts. He was followed to the rail by Mario Puccini, who earned €220k, and Andre Morath, who pocketed €290k. That set up the marathon heads-up stage that would follow.
During the dinner break, Chen and Kitai struck a deal, which left the eventual runner-up with €613k and the winner with €712k.
