The first Day 1 flight of the
EPT’s season 9 Berlin Main Event went into the books on Sunday.
347 players bellied up to the tables at the start of the poker tournament, putting in 8 levels of action, at the end of which only 179 players were left standing. Germany’s own Ronny Voth was the one who finished with the largest stack. He had 196.1k chips bagged, quite a bit more than Mike Kunze in second place, who finished with 188k. Local players thoroughly dominated the first day 1 flight: the top 5 was made up exclusively of Germans. Voth and Kunze were joined at the top by Thomas Richter, Sebastian Trisch and Giuseppe Vassallo.
Given the high profile nature of the event, it wasn’t really a surprise to see scores of “name” competitors belly up to the tables at the beginning of the day. Some of these guys safely navigated the treacherous waters of the 8 peril-laden levels, getting their day 2 tickets punched in the end.
Marcin Horecki and Marc-Andre Ladouceur survived on healthy stacks. They will be joined on day 2 by Barny Boatman, Scott Seiver and Matthias de Meulder. Max Lykov and Liv Boeree will be back as well, albeit on much less impressive stacks.
Justin Bonomo and Steve O’Dwyer on the other hand didn’t fare well at all: they were both eliminated, together with Rupert Elder and Ruben Visser. Dan Smith saw action too and he too was forced to admit defeat in the end. Although he started off well, he ran into trouble later in the
poker tournament and he eventually bit the dust. The one responsible for his untimely departure from the tables was Dominik Nitsche.
Nitsche continued on in the tournament and he finished the day with 137.5k chips.
