EPT Budapest Day 2 report

182 survivors of the European Poker Tour’s Budapest stop took to the tables on Day 2. The field included the overall chip leader Mauro Corsetti, as well as Annette Obrestad in a close second place and Arnaud Mattern – himself nicely stacked.
At the end of the day, only 42 players were left, and with the chip lead taken over by Albert Iversen, both Annette Obrestad and Arnoud Mattern were at the rail. Mauro Corsetti survived the day’s hostilities and will play on Day 3, on a pretty hefty stack.
The money bubble was reached on Day 2, and several eliminated players needed to head to the payout booth instead of the rail.
One of the earliest eliminations befell William Thorson of PokerStars, as he pushed his short-stack all-in early on. Soon, a flood of short-stacked players followed him, as Alan Smurfit, Chris Moorman and Pierre Husson all joined him on the sidelines.
Moorman managed to trap Benjamin Lebor on a A,A vs J,J match-up, a trap which backfired when Lebor hit a flush on the 8h, Qh, 8s, 2h, 5h board.
Luca Pagano and Claudio Pagano also busted out relatively early on.
Annette Obrestad got her stack all-in on a hand in which she held a solid lead. On a flop of J, 7, 9 she held a 9,7, against the caller (Ivo Donev) who held a top pair on a pocket hand of J,8. Lady Luck would deny reward for yet another good call though, as the turn came an 8 overturning the situation in Donev’s favor. The river failed to help Obrestad, who was thus compelled to pack and leave too.
Arnaud Mattern’s demise came at the hands of Lukas Benkovic. Holding an A,K, Mattern decided to try to make Benkovic fold on a flop of 4,7,4 unaware that the latter had an A,7 in the hole for the two pair with the ace kicker. Benkovic raised him and eventually took him all-in on a 2 on the turn and a 6 on the river. Thomas Vestergaard received the unfortunate honor of busting out on the bubble when his A,Ko ran into Christophe Wemelbecke’s Ac,Kc , who then went on to flop a flush. Notable eliminations after the bubble burst were Sorel Mizzi, Ludovic Lacay and Kara Scott. The day ended with Albert Iverson in the chip lead with 442,500 chips, followed by Martin Jacobson (with 365,000) and Ciprian Hrisca (with 280,000).
