EPT Campione – Day 2 Report

The second day of the EPT’s Campione Main Event saw 325 players return to the tables of the Casino di Campione. 6 levels of play were logged on day 2, at the end of which only 99 players remained in contention. The end of the day chip lead went to Hungary’s Balazs Botond, who accumulated 646k chips to take a comfortable lead over second place man Ronny Kaiser and his 506.5k chips. Both players in the top 2 flew under the radar for most of the day. As his table-mates would attest, Botond played well all through the day, and he hadn’t really had the chance to take advantage of a lucky chip-up. Kaiser has been on fire for the last couple of weeks at the online Omaha tables at PokerStars, and he didn’t disappoint in the live setting either. Like the end of the day chip leader, Kaiser spent much of the day sneaking along under the radar. He eventually drew attention to himself by picking up a massive pot. There were no fewer than 3 hands involved in the pot. Kaiser had pocket rockets against an opponent’s A,K and against another guy’s pocket 8s. The rockets held and Kaiser managed to send two people to the rail in one move, taking his stack past the 500k mark for the first time.

After close to 8 seasons, the EPT has still failed to create a double champion. Given the fact though that there are no fewer than 8 EPT champions in the remaining 99, the Campione Main Event may yet enter poker history for that very reason.
Kaiser is obviously the one currently in the best position to make that title dash. Besides him, there’s David Vamplew – who’s the possessor of a healthy stack too – Roberto Romanello – who isn’t a pushover either, Liv Boeree and Nicolas Chouity. Bertrand Grospellier, Rupert Elder and Martin Finger are still in contention as well.
