EPT Deauville High Roller – Day 1 Report

The first day of the EPT Deauville’s High Roller saw a record number of buy-ins go into the middle. A total of 113 buy-ins were registered, and with registration still open till the beginning of Day 2, that number may in fact go further up. 95 players bellied up to the tables and 18 of them decided to fire another bullet after they got bounced. Last year, in this same event, only 85 players put their buy-ins into the middle.
At the end of the day, it was Hungary’s Marton Czuczor who clinched the chip lead. He had 274.6k chips bagged. Dario Sammartino was the player Czuczor battled for the lead for most of the day. Even though in the end he lost the race to the top, Sammartino had some 251.7k chips bagged in second place. Adrian Mateos Diaz finished with a large stack as well in third place: he had 236.6k chips.

10 levels of action went into the day, at the end of which 53 players were left standing, their tickets punched for Day 2.
David Vamplew was one of the particularly unlucky victims of the day. He first got bounced from the poker tournament by Albert Daher from Lebanon. After he re-bought, he was sent packing the second time by the eventual chip leader.

Although it was probably slim consolation for Vamplew, he wasn’t the only EPT champion who got sent home on Day 1: he was followed to the rail by Jake Cody and Bertrand Grospellier.
Grospellier’s tournament life ended at Steve O’Dwyer’s hands. The Frenchman pushed his last chips into the middle holding a pair of 6s. O’Dwyer made the call with an A,Jo and proceeded to catch a pair on the board. Cody’s demise came after his pocket Js fell to Julian Thomas’ pocket rockets.
