EPT Deauville Main Event – Day 5 Report

The penultimate day of the EPT’s Deauville Main Event saw 23 players return to the tables with the objective of playing right down to the final table. Indeed, by the end of the day, that objective had been handily accomplished. The chip leader going into the final stretch of the poker tournament is France's own Remi Castaignon, who didn't simply grab the lead, he did so in style and he now has an overwhelmingly large stack of chips piled up in front of him. Castaignon finished the day with 9.9 million chips. To put that into perspective, just consider that the second-place man is Walid Bou Habib from Lebanon, who finished with 3.83 million chips. Castaignon did indeed put in a rather dominating performance at the green felt on Day 5. 15 players needed to go in order for the final stage of the event to be set up, and of those 15 players, 8 headed to the rail courtesy of the Frenchman.

The first victim of Day 5 was Eric Sfez, who got his last chips into the middle on the turn of a board which gave him nothing more than a top pair. With such a hand, he was basically looking for trouble and he did indeed find it when Castaignon made the call with a two pair. Sfez failed to catch up, and thus the ice was broken.
Cyril Andre was the start of the day chip leader and he did indeed put up quite a bit of a fight at the tables. For a while in the beginning, the chip lead went back and forth between him and Castaignon.
The final table bubble boy was Glen Cymbaluk, himself eliminated by eventual chip leader. The final table of the event will thus feature a rather unknown crowd.
