EPT Deauville Main Event - French Contingent Dominates

The traditional French stop of the
European Poker Tour kicked off a couple of days ago in Deauville, drawing some 592 players from all over Europe and the world to its tables. While the home crowd is always expected to dominate the starting field, this time, the domination was more obvious than ever. Of the above said 592 players, 242 were French (some of them are obviously gone already) making it clear that despite the ever increasing woes of the online poker industry in the country, the French public is still very much interested in the game.
Obviously, while there is indeed strength in numbers as far as the mathematical odds are concerned, there are no guarantees for the home crowd that this year's winner will be one of their guys.

The second biggest contingent after the French one at the EPT Deauville Main Event is the Italian one. No longer having an EPT event of their own, the Italians showed up in force in this one, as 34 of their players bellied up to the tables. As long as the winner of the 2008 EPT Prague, Salvatore Bonavena is still alive in the event, so are Italian hopes for finally having a 2-time EPT winner of their own. Of course, the home team holds the advantage in this respect a well, as they have Remi Castaignon and Lucien Cohen still in action.
At the end of the second day 1 flight, France's Guillaume Darcourt - one of the seasoned pros at the event - had the largest stack. Italy's Alessandro Valli finished Day 1 in second place.
