EPT Grand Final - Day 1A Report

The first of the day 1 flights of the Grand Final of the European Poker Tour wrapped up the other day, having drawn a total of 286 buy-ins. The defending champion of the poker tournament, Adrian Mateos, was not among the Day 1A participants, so all eyes were on soccer superstar Ronaldo instead, who was involved in the action as one of PokerStars' representatives. Unfortunately for him and for his fans, Ronaldo didn't last long at all: he was bounced during the first level of action, in fact, he was the very first player to hit the rail. The Season 7 champion of the Grand Final, Ivan Freitez, didn't fare much better either: he was the one following Ronaldo to the rail, after he had staked his tournament life onto an A,10 against Antonio Buonanno's A,K.
Dan Shak, Daniel Pidun and Oleksii Kovalchuk were also among the early victims.

At the end of the day, the one with the largest stack was Roman Verenko: he had 198k chips bagged. Govert Metaal followed him in second place with 171.2k chips, while Paolo Compagno's stack of 170.5k was enough for second place. Anthony Spinella was one of the "name" players who made the top 10: he finished 8th, with 129.4k chips to his name.
Team PokerStars Pro was represented by three players on Day 1A: Jake Cody, Jason Mercier and Bertrand Grospellier all made it through. Cody was the most successful of the three, having bagged 114.3k chips. Other "name" competitors who made the Day 1A cut were Isaac Haxton, John Gale, Justin Bonomo, Faraz Jaka and Max Silver.
