Last season, Madrid played host to the EPT’s Grand Final. This time around, the Madrid event got kind of sidetracked and shoved among the regular events, as the Grand Final was moved back to Monte Carlo. Due to the flare-up of the high stakes
online poker action at PokerStars, there were few notables among the Day 1A registrants. A total of 125 players coughed up the €5.3k buy-in.
Team PokerStars Pros were present, though several of them faded away shortly after kick-off. Martin Staszko was among the first players to bite the dust. He was joined on the rail by fellow PokerStars pro Marcin Horecki, whose pocket 10s fell to an opponent’s Ac,Kc for the bust.
Pierre Neuville had a much better day, but he too failed to make it past the hurdle: he fell during the final level, when his A,Ko proved useless against an opponent’s pocket Ks.
Fortunately, the honor of Team PokerStars Pro was saved by Alex Kravchenko, who survived with a stack of 28.9k chips and Henrique Pinho, who finished the day on a 25.1k stack. Other Team PokerStars Pros who survived were Arnaud Mattern and Toni Judet.
Notables who failed to make the cut were Roberto Romanello, whose hand was obliterated by an opponent’s gutshot straight which successfully filled up, Marcel Bjerkmann, whose pocket Ks were no match for an opponent’s pocket rockets, and Juha Helppi, whose A,K got wrecked by someone’s pocket Ks.
Zimnan Ziyard busted out of the tournament too. He made a call with bottom pair against Martins Adeniya’s full house. That pot thrust Adeniya into the lead, but he later dropped some chips to finish on a still respectable 95k stack.
Barny Boatman and Dermot Blain were among those who survived as well. A total of 8 levels were played on Day 1A, at the end of which, Sergiy Baranov emerged with the chip lead, having amassed a stack of 152.5k chips.
