EPT Monte Carlo Grand Final – Day 1A Report

The first day 1 flight of the EPT’s Monaco Grand Final was a bit of a disappointment turn-out-wise. Only 108 players bellied up to the tables, looking to earn a seat for Day 2. 53 of them did indeed manage to attain that goal. Dan Smith was the one who finished the day with the largest stack: he had 136.5k chips bagged at the end of the day, marginally more than second place man Pablo Fernandez, who finished with 135.9k.
The top 10 at the end of the day was rife with big names. Besides Smith, Freddy Deeb finished among the top players as well: his stack of 133.9k chips was enough for provisional 3rd place. Jake Cody was right in the mix as well: he finished 5th with 119k chips. Paul Volpe and Jan Bendik made the top 10 as well, both of them finishing with 6-figure stacks.

To illustrate how disappointing the Day 1A turn-out was, one only needs to compare it to last year’s figures: last season’s Day 1A saw 163 players more, which means that in order to make up for the series Day 1A handicap, this year’s Grand Final needs to attract 557 players on its day 1B, only to equal last year’s attendance.

Smith played well through the day and he took advantage of a bluff or two here and there on his way to the top, not to mention Lady Luck’s assistance: he made two boats and he managed to milk them well too. Jan Bendik, who is the current EPT Player of the Year leader, had a good day too. He started off by sending Richard Milne and Alex Bilokur to the rail. He finished the day in 8th place, with 108.9k chips to his name.
