EPT Monte Carlo Grand Final – Day 2 Report

The second official day of EPT hostilities went into the book as players reconvened and then battled down to 130 the other day. The provisional chip lead went to Max Martinez, who had a hell of a ride to the top of the pops indeed: he began the day on a decent stack and he worked his way up gradually as he joined the bustle at the top of the chip counts. He then picked up some pocket rockets and successfully managed to get an opponent – who held pocket Qs – all-in with them. A Q which fell on the flop gave his opponent the pot, the majority of his chips in it. Down to 65k chips, Martinez then mounted a desperate comeback. He knocked out players left and right and after Ivan Kudriavtcev’s elimination, he was sitting on 456.3k chips, the lead safe in his possession. Kudriavtcev ran a pair of 7s into Martinez’s pocket 10s for the bust.

Early on Day 2, the eliminations came hard and thick: a whole bunch of ‘name’ players bit the dust well before Martinez started his dash. Vanessa Selbst highlighted the lot, together with Victor Ramdin and Kevin MacPhee. Samuel Chartier and David Vamplew also fell to the attrition.
Online poker qualifier Malte Moenning, who had secured his Grand Final seat through PokerStars, was the first one to relieve start of the day chip leader Nick Yunis of his position. PokerStars’ Pius Heinz and Angel Guillen managed to get things rolling too, while the same couldn’t be said about Daniel Negreanu and Joe Cada, who were both eliminated. Sam Trickett was particularly unfortunate: he was hit by bad luck several times and eventually pushed out of the event altogether. Justin Bonomo on the other hand clinched and held on to the chip lead for a while.
Phil Ivey busted out as well, just as TV crews were getting ready to set up shop at his table.
