EPT Monte Carlo Grand Final – Day 3 report

With the money bubble out of the way on Day 2, the 116 players who returned to the tables of the poker tournament on Day 3 were all content in the knowledge that they had some dough secured. Therefore, instead of the often headless rush which characterized the previous day, caution took over as things turned more and more serious with every new elimination. That didn’t mean the pace of eliminations wouldn’t be a sustained one though, after all, the final 24 had to be reached by the day’s end.
At the end of the Day 3 hostilities, Kevin Eyster from the US had the largest stack of chips. He amassed 2.7 million chips, over 100k more than second place man Matt Perrins from the UK who had 2.6 million.
The clutch moment for Eyster proved to be the win he scored against Mikhail Smirnov. Not only did he bust the Russian, the pot gave him the chip lead to which he held on all the way to the final whistle.
Eyster had A,6 against Smirnov’s Q,J and shoved all-in on a board of A,6,J,Q,K to bounce his opponent.

The biggest pot of the day was linked to Perrins’ name though. He got into a 3-way tussle with Kenny Hallert and Domenico Iannone. Iannone eventually got out of the way when things turned serious, but Hallert stuck around until all the chips went into the middle. He then turned over pocket rockets against Perrins’ pocket Ks. The turn brought another K though, and Hallert was eliminated as Perrins picked up a bunch of chips.
Online poker great Sami Kelopuro was among the survivors as well, together with Ramzi Jelassi and Salvatore Bonavena, who remained the only EPT champ in contention. Victoria Coren and Moritz Kranich were both eliminated.

Chris Moneymaker had started the day wielding one of the biggest stacks in the poker tournament. He was a little careless with his chips though, and at the end of a busted steal attempt, which saw his J,4 go up against another guy’s pocket 8s, he was left with no other option but to head towards the rail.

The goal on Day 4 will be for the remaining field of 24 players to play right down to the final table.
