As big a nation as Spain is, it had failed for years to produce a
European Poker Tour Champion. That dry spell came to an end with the end of the Main Event of the Tour's Monte Carlo Grand Final, which saw Spain's Adrian Mateos crowned the winner. For Mateos, the win, which netted him almost €1.1 million, brought the second major poker title as well as the second biggest payday of his career. The Spaniard made no deals on his way to the top: he went for all the marbles. He is now the proud possessor of two of the three titles required for poker's Triple Crown.
The one Mateos beat out heads-up for the win was Senegal's Muyedine Fares, whose reward was €679k.

The start of the final day of the Main Event saw 6 players return, each and every one of them looking to walk away a winner. The final 6 featured quite a motley and impressive selection of poker talent: PokerStars' own Johnny Lodden was there, together with Ole Schemion, Season 10's players of the year. Jose Carlos Garcia of Poland was also in contention.
The first player to bite the dust at the final table was Japan's Koichi Nozaki. The reward for 6th place was €120.7k. Nozaki was followed to the rail by Markus Ross of Germany, whose prize tipped the scale at €174.3k. Schemion followed in 4th place: he picked up €233.5k. Jose Carlos Garcia and Johnny Lodden were next. They picked up €297.2k and €379k respectively. Johnny Lodden's 4th place finish was especially impressive in light of the fact that he had finished 3rd in the same event a year ago. Lebanon's Hady El Asmar finished 3rd for €486k.
