EPT Monte Carlo Grand Final – Super High Roller Day 1 Report

The first day of the EPT Monte Carlo Grand Final’s Super High Roller saw 25 players belly up to the tables initially, but – because buy-ins continued through the day – the eventual tally was much more impressive. Given the size of the buy-in (€100k), it’s needless to say that only high-profile competitors played in this one. PokerStars pro Jason Mercier finished the first day of action with the largest stack. He was followed on the provisional chip leader board by Sorel Mizzi, whose 885k chip stack wasn’t exactly impressive in comparison to Mercier’s 1.18 million chips. Patrik Antonius played as well, being one of the players who put their first buy-ins into the middle with less than two hours remaining. At that point in the day, several of those who got going earlier had already burned through their second buy-in. Phil Ivey for instance did just that and he busted out both times.

The player responsible for sending Ivey to the rail at the end of his first buy-in was Justin Bonomo. Bonomo made a risky move committing with a gutshot straight and flush draw but he filled his hand on the river.
Mikhail Smirnov and Ilya Bulychev bit the dust next, followed by PokerStars’ own Jonathan Duhamel. Duhamel was sent to the rail by Bonomo too, whose pocket Qs made short work of the former’s pocket 10s. Unlike Phil Ivey, Duhamel decided not to re-enter straight away, although he will probably fire another bullet on Day 2.
Having pumped $200k into the event with absolutely nothing to show for it, Phil Ivey is kind of “pot committed” at this stage, which is probably why he’s rumored to be planning to enter yet again on Day 2.

Play at PokerStars to give yourself an opportunity to win a seat in one of the EPT events for not much more than pocket change.
