The
EPT Prague’s Charity Challenge was the scene of tennis pro and PokerStars representative Rafael Nadal’s live poker tournament debut, and what a debut it was: Nadal ended up with the win, having disposed of opponents like soccer players Andriy Shevchenko and Ronaldo, skier Alberto Tomba of Italy, as well as PokerStars’ own Daniel Negreanu. The event featured a $100k “prize-pool” which the winners could give away to a charity of their choice. The maximum contribution in the event was €50k, while the minimum tipped the scale at €5k.
PokerStars’ Daniel Negreanu got off to a quick start, having picked up a bunch of good hands and dominating the other players in the single table SNG. The tables got turned on the poker pro though, and soon, he found himself the short-stack.
The first player to bite the dust was Alberto Tomba, who was sent packing by Daniel Negreanu. The Italian picked up €5k for a charity of his choice. The one who followed Tomba to the sidelines was Ronaldo, who got to hand out €5k too, to his charity.
Despite having started off well and having scored the first elimination, Daniel Negreanu was the next one to be bounced. Nadal doubled up at Negreanu’s expense twice in a row, before getting involved in a three-way all-in with the Canadian and Shevchenko. The Spaniard won that hand too, sending Negreanu to the rail.
Having reached 80k chips, Nadal was firmly in the driver’s seat. He first disposed of Shevchenko in 3rd place, leaving the Ukrainian with €10k to hand out to his charity.
The heads-up stage of the event saw Nadal go up against Fatima Moreira de Melo, whom he bounced too, after his Q,10o got the better of Moreira’s 10h, 6h in the last hand of the poker tournament.
