EPT San Remo – Day 5 report

24 players returned to the tables of the Casino Municipale in San Remo with the objective to play down to the final table on day 5 of the EPT’s Main Event. Sure enough, at the end of the day, of the 1,216 initial registrants, only a tableful were still standing, as Sweden’s Jacob Carlsson led the way with a stack of about 13 million chips.
The early going on Day 5 claimed the poker tournament lives of a whole bunch of front runners. As a matter of fact, at the end of the day, only two of the 10 players who’d started the day in the top were still around. Carlsson was one of these players.

Responsible for the Swede’s emergence as chip leader was Alexey Rybin, who donated most his chips to him, right before the last two tables were combined, in the wake of Dmitry Stelmak’s elimination in 10th place.
The said hand started with a preflop raise by Carlsson, one that got quickly called by Rybin. The flop fell Kc,10c,Qh and Carlsson fired out a bet. Rybin raised him and in response, the Swede shoved all-in. The Russian was quick to make the call, and right he was: he had J,9 for the straight and Carlsson has Q,Q for a set. The K on the river paired the board though and Carlsson made a boat for the win.

Carlsson was not the only one slicing through the reaming field like a hot knife through butter though. Ultimate Bet pro Liv Boeree was in the mix too, and she took no prisoners either. First, she eliminated Per Lindle, then continued with Luigi Pignataro. In both decisive hands, Bouree picked up pocket Ks to best Lindle’s pocket Js and Pignataro’s A,10.
Michal Piper had an excellent early run too, though he hit a serious snag when he dropped most of his chips to Toni Pettersson. He eventually clawed his way back into the game and managed to make the final table. Pettersson made the final table too, as did Alexey Rybin, Claudio Piceci and Giuseppe Diep.
The start of the day chip leader, Allan Baekke, finished in 12th place, eliminated by Rybin. The final table bubble boy in the poker tournament was Claudio Rinaldi. Bumped off by Carlsson, his elimination blew the final whistle on the day.
