Lately, all nosebleed stakes online action and most of the live poker action has been taken over by a new generation: the
online poker generation. Hall of Famers have a hard time showing up at a final table here and there, and their days of dominating the game are more or less over. Nothing could be further from the truth for one Hall of Famer though: Erik Seidel. Seidel is beyond doubt a member of the golden generation: guys who have been around since before the online poker explosion. Guys who have dedicated a large part of their lives to the game back when it was nowhere as trendy as it is today. Guys who know a side of the game the online generation will never get to know.
Seidel hasn’t exactly become as irrelevant as some of his peers as he managed to log 6 and 7-figure tournament winnings every year since 2001. His best pre-2011 year’s profit came in 2008, when he managed to amass $2,200,333 in winnings.
All those performances were dwarfed in the first 27 days of 2011 alone though, a time-span during which Seidel managed to accumulate $3,433,213 in tournament winnings.
The PCA ignited Seidel’s run, through the $5,000 6-max NL
Holdem event that he won for a little over $46k, besting a starting field of 64 players. That happened on January 10.
The heater continued just two days later in the PCA’s record-setting High Roller event, in which Seidel carried a short-stack to 4th place, to earn a $295,960 reward.
Seidel’s next win came in the Aussie Millions, where he once again finished deep (3rd place) to pick up an additional $618k.
Riding his heater, Seidel bought into the $250k Super High Roller event of the Aussie Millions too. That proved to be his winning move: he went on to win the event for $2.5 million.
Whether Seidel continues to take advantage of his momentum remains to be seen. One thing is certain: his career year has already been set, even if he doesn’t play a single additional poker hand in 2011.
