FTP Montreal Main Event – Henri Balcazar Wins

The 5th day of the Full Tilt Poker Montreal Main Event was dedicated in its entirety to the 9-handed final table. Despite the fact that some dug-in trench warfare – which would’ve been entirely plausible – could have prolonged the hostilities, eventually, it only took the 9 players a little less than 9 hours to play down to a winner. That winner was Henri Balcazar, who – despite a three-way deal he struck up with eventual runner-up Eric Despres and third place man Mike Linster – set a new record by taking down the largest prize ever awarded at the Playground Poker Club: a little over $194k. His victory only a couple of seconds old, Balcazar already drew up investment plans by promising his mother to buy her a new car.

The first player to head to the rail was Colin Peche, who bit the dust about an hour into the day, even though Mike Linster had had a close brush with elimination before. Peche pushed all-in holding pocket 8s and Linster made the call with pocket Js, never giving his opponent any kind of a chance.
Zeng Yi Xie busted in 8th place, picking up $35.1k for his efforts. He was followed to the rail by Roger Lamia in 7th and by start of the day chip leader Vinny Pahuja in 6th. Pahuja fell to the eventual winner, collecting a $58k reward for his efforts. Lamia picked up a $44.9k prize.

Bill Kontaratos, one of the main headliners of the poker tournament, followed in 5th place. Local favorite Guillaume Rivet – himself a previous chip leader of the tournament – went out in 4th place, picking up $96.1k.
The top three players then agreed to a deal, which worked out wonderfully for Linster, who ended up collecting $200k for his 3rd place. Runner-up Eric Despres only took home $150k.
