Full Tilt Poker Ditches Italy Option

The woes of Europe’s newly regulated, segregated and fenced-off online poker markets haven’t gone unnoticed in the industry. It is not a secret anymore that France, Italy and Spain are non-options for online poker operators, with other European countries joining them fast. Excessive regulation and taxation have killed off all growth in these markets, and the way things are going, online poker may soon disappear completely from the map there.
In the latest confirmation of the un-attractiveness of the Italian poker industry, Full Tilt Poker have decided to not even attempt to break into the market there. Apparently, it was a representative of the poker room’s ownership who dropped the ball regarding the site’s decision to not enter Italy anymore.
While the source quoted a number of different reasons for the decision, it also made it clear that the marked decline of the Italian gambling industry was the main reason behind the move.

Full Tilt Poker’s Italian launch has long been anticipated by gambling interests everywhere, especially since it came to light that the company behind the operation, Rational Group, had applied for a license in Italy. Full Tilt’s Italian site, FullTilt.it, still says “coming soon” but apparently, that message is now redundant. Amaya Gaming are reportedly shifting their focus to PokerStars only as far as the Italian market is concerned.
Everything does indeed seem to point to a major strategy-shift for Amaya Gaming in Europe. Following the announcement regarding Full Tilt Poker, Amanda Beltrami, PokerStars.it’s country manager, became Senior Project Manager for Southern Europe, in a move which may signal a loss of interest in the individual poker markets of the countries mentioned at the beginning of this piece.
