Global Poker Index Update

To many, it may seem surprising how much importance some of the poker pros give to global rankings, but they do indeed. Rankings like the GPI (Global Poker Index) also add a layer of legitimacy to the game, so they’re absolutely welcome and review-worthy every now and then.
In the 2013 GPI Player of the Year race, nothing changed within the top 10 last week. Ole Schemion had a chokehold on the top spot with 892.4 points and Paul Volpe managed to hang on to his second spot as well.
PokerStars pro Daniel Negreanu is third, followed by Mike Watson in 4th.
Schemion’s top spot is by all means a well deserved one: thus far this year, he made 12 final tables in various major live poker events and 4 times he managed to go all the way.
The player who made the biggest headway on the PoY ranks was Italy’s Giacomo Fundaro, who advanced 38 spots landing in 100th place, thanks to his €20k win in the €1.5k Peoples Poker Tour, held in Nova Gorica.
Unlike the PoY rankings, the top 10 of the GPI’s top 300 list saw quite a bit of bustle: While the leader, Marvin Rettenmaier, managed to preserve his position, pretty much everyone else moved around. Ole Schemion managed to make major headway there too, advancing 4 places right into second. Philipp Gruissem moved up too, albeit by only one place into 3rd. David Sands and Mike Watson moved up 4 places each, landing in 4th and 5th respectively. Steve O’Dwyer moved upward too, by one place, into 6th, while Igor Kurganov landed in 7th place, having moved up 3 places himself.
Daniel Negreanu was by far the biggest loser of the top 10: he dropped 6 places, into 8th. Joseph Cheong dropped quite a bit too: 5 places to land at the bottom of the top 10.
