Global Poker Index Update – Phil Ivey Out

The Global Poker Index is an attempt to rank tournament players according to the results they log in live and online poker tournaments. The GPI is basically a list of the 300 top tournament players. No one under 300 is tracked by the GPI. Changes in the rankings occur all the time given how alive and kicking the tournament scene is. Usually, the most active players move up the rankings, while those who do not play whittle away. That was the case of Phil Ivey, considered by some the best poker player ever, who has pretty much disappeared after he had announced his
2011 WSOP boycott.
Erik Seidel is currently at the top of the list, followed by Jason Mercier and Eugene Katchalov. Juha Helppi – currently in 9th place – is the only player who managed to break into the top 10 this week. His ascent is due to his 15th place finish in the Partouche Poker Tour’s Main Event. Daniel Negreanu had held the 9th spot before Helppi’s jump. He now slipped to 11th place.
There was only another slight change in the top 10: Seidel’s lead has increased over Mercier by a few points.
10 new people made the top 300, among them the winner of the WPT Malta Main Event, Matt Giannetti.
Oleksii Kovalchuk made the list as well, thanks to his 9th place finish in the Partouche Poker Tour Main Event.
Of course, for the 10 people who have ascended into the GPI, 10 were dropped from the list, among them Darren Woods, Chris Tryba and Phil Ivey.
Phil Ivey’s decline is not due to the fact that he hadn’t been doing well at the green felt lately, but rather to the fact that he hasn’t played at all in a while. Exactly what his disappearance means for the poker world and for Full Tilt’s players is not yet clear.
